Horses are beneficial to the mental and physical wellbeing of people. They also help us to create a sense of community where people can come and connect with each other as well as with animals. Horses can help people with their everyday life skills as well as help to build confidence and self esteem.

Roy started his jockey career at 16 years old winning the first 2 races that he rode. He rode at Stampede Park and Northlands Park until he was 28 when he suffered a career ending injury. His love for horse racing and Thoroughbreds has never changed. The program he currently teaches that he is most passionate about is the Flying Cross Jockey Club where he teaches young people to race ride.

Members of the Jockey club learn about horsemanship, teamwork, and being accountable to the horses, each other, and themselves. The jockey club not only builds these kids up physically it also builds their self confidence, social skills, and public speaking. This program aims to not only create amazing athletes but also build ambassadors for the sport of racing and in the process teaches these kids invaluable life skills.

Part of our program involves giving back to the community. In the past they have put on a day for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and done fundraisers for Santa’s anonymous and the Lacombe food bank.

We believe that teaching these kids how to give back to their community is helping to build valuable members of society who will have a lot to offer as adults. The idea of doing something for someone else without expecting anything in return is a valuable lesson.

Being a part of the Jockey Club takes commitment from both parents and participants. Jockey Club members are required to learn how to care for their horses and are required to do chores on race nights. They will learn to groom, tack and feed their equine partner.
To be able to ride at the level needed to race, riders must commit to paying for 2 lessons per week. The level of rider it takes to get to the point of racing requires 5-6 lessons per week and the remainder of the lessons are sponsored buy the club. Our program has grown from 5 riders to over 20 riders who all need horses. These horses are all supplied buy the Jockey Club. This auction is seen as a way to keep costs down for families while still being able to maintain the horses needed for the program.
